What to Expect at Your First Therapy Session: A Complete Guide

Guided Hope TeamApril 10, 20264 min read

Deciding to go to therapy is a big step — and it's completely normal to feel nervous about your first session. What will they ask? Will I have to talk about everything right away? What if I cry? These are questions we hear all the time at Guided Hope Family Counseling, and we want you to know: there's nothing you need to "prepare" to feel ready. Just showing up is enough.

Here's a clear, honest look at what your first therapy session will actually be like — so you can walk in feeling informed and a little more at ease.

Before Your Session

1. Paperwork and Intake Forms

Before your first session, you'll typically fill out intake paperwork. This includes basic information about yourself, your insurance, your medical history, and a brief overview of what's bringing you to therapy. Many practices, including ours, offer digital forms you can complete from home so you're not filling out clipboards in the waiting room.

2. It's Okay to Not Know What to Say

You don't need to have your thoughts perfectly organized or know exactly what your "issue" is. Your therapist is trained to guide the conversation. If you show up and say, "I'm not really sure where to start," that's a perfectly fine place to begin.

During Your First Session

3. Getting to Know Each Other

Your first session is largely about building a relationship. Your therapist will introduce themselves, explain how sessions work, and ask you some questions about your life, your background, and what prompted you to seek therapy. Think of it as a conversation, not an interrogation.

4. You Set the Pace

A good therapist will never push you to share more than you're comfortable with in the first session. You're in control of what you talk about and how deep you go. Trust is built over time, and your therapist understands that.

5. Confidentiality Is Explained

Your therapist will walk you through confidentiality — what stays in the room and the very limited exceptions (like immediate safety concerns). This is a legal and ethical foundation of therapy, and it's there to protect you.

6. You Might Set Some Initial Goals

Toward the end of the session, your therapist may ask what you'd like to work toward. These don't have to be grand or specific — "I want to feel less anxious" or "I want to communicate better with my partner" are great starting points. Goals can always evolve as therapy progresses.

After Your First Session

7. It's Normal to Feel... a Lot of Things

Some people leave their first session feeling relieved. Others feel emotionally drained, or even unsure. All of this is normal. Therapy stirs things up, and it can take a few sessions before you settle into the process. Give it time.

8. The Therapist-Client Fit Matters

Not every therapist is the right fit for every person — and that's okay. If after a session or two you don't feel a connection, it's perfectly acceptable to try someone else. What matters most is that you feel safe, heard, and respected.
